Introduction

"In this world of rapid change, where information is expanding exponentially and increasing in complexity, learning is a survival skill. Mastering the basics-reading, writing, and arithmetic-is as important as ever, but is no longer enough. Today's students need to learn more than previous generations. They need to know how to find and use new information, to make informed decisions about complicated issues, and to collaborate as part of a team. Since the pace of change shows no signs of slowing in the future, students also need to learn how to learn."
-- The George Lucas Educational Foundation

The purpose of this website is to provide information about technology as a tool for learning in our school. Our faculty desires to improve the quality of the educational process at our school to help our students achieve their highest potential. Therefore, we have committed to integrating technology into the curriculum. The reason for networks, Internet connections, and computers in the classroom is to positively impact the learning experience for all of our students.

About Mrs. S. Johnson

For the past 3 years, I have been the Technology Coordinator and Computer Applications teacher at Floyd Middle Magnet School for Mathematics, Science and Technology. During my employment, the school has received several technology department grants, and was recognized by as "One of the Nation's Top 100 Wired Schools" in the May 2001 issue of FamilyPC Magazine. I have taught the use of both Macintosh and Windows platforms. I cover numerous word processing, database, spreadsheet, communications, desktop publishing, web page and video production applications on both platforms, as well as web portals, internet tools and networking issues. I have also exposed students to business concepts nad practices through a student entrepreneurship program.

I received a B.S. in Business Administration, minor in Communications, concentration in Marketing, from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to my teaching experience, I worked in communications and public relations at Alabama State University. I have also been a licensed financial consultant for SunAmerica in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. I feel that my varied experiences -- all of which were permeated with computer applications -- assist me in bringing computer skills to life for my students. I am able to show them why they need these skills and how they might actually use them in the workplace.

My husband, Mr. Johnson is a 6th Grade Integrated Science teacher at FMMS and we have 3 children -- David, age 1, MaKayla, age 6, and Undre, age 9.
